When his father died on a drunk driving accident that claimed the lives of Virgil’s wife and babies, David “Dave” Stebbins engaged in a campaign of terror against Virgil, who planted hundreds of crosses covered with warnings against killing others across his yard because he believed that God had told him to do it.
Driven by hatred, Dave continued his campaign for a decade, until Shadowman arrived into town. Though Shadowman prevented Dave and his friends from terrorizing Virgil for one night, Virgil prevented him from killing Dave despite knowing that he would not stop tormenting him.
Presumably, Dave continued his assault long after Shadowman left town.
