In a bid to rid the world from the presence of Master Darque, a 19th Century necromancer, the Coven, a group of practitioners of the mystic arts, endows Jack Boniface, a jazz player, with the Darque Power, a form of necromantic energy, to transform him into the dark-vested hero known as Shadowman.
Exploiting the Coven’s power to block Master Darque from approaching their ceremonies and conceal their identities, Anjenetta Grampion, a voodoo priestess, poses as Jack’s housekeeper to guide him. To help Jack with his transformation, Anjenetta makes him a costume with the sigil of a shadow in a doorway that symbolizes the Loa within his soul that comes out to fight at night.
Shadowman's first costume burns to ashes during Unity when Jack stops Phil Seleski, the hero called Solar, from killing Erica Pierce, the God-like entity called Mothergod.
Elya Ann Smith, a pterosaur jockey who Jack falls in love with in the Lost Land, an anomaly in a pocket of reality outside the normal flow of time where time moves in a loop, makes a replica of Jack's costume that tatters in his first encounter with Master Darque.
At Jack’s behest, Anjenetta sews his sigil into a leather costume that he wears from then on.
